A very kind and sympathetic staff nurse was phoning, from A&E, to let me know that the reason my husband was 2 hours late coming home was that he'd had a side on disagreement with a car.
Some muppet of a car driver had turned right across his path at some traffic lights - apparently not even seeing him or the car next to him. My lovely hubby then proceeded - thankfully at low speed - to push his head through the passenger side window of the car.
Incredibly and unbelievably he's fine. He's home after a night spent in hospital. Very bruised. Nothing broken. Utterly exhausted. Totally unaware of what really happened as he blacked out on impact.
Bit p'd off that they had to do this to get his motorcycle jacket off....
...but glad that his helmet was worth a few weeks grocery money....
...and it stood up remarkably well considering it pushed his head through a toughened glass car window!
His bike is dead - RIP Mike the Bike :(
His parents are livid. Saying 'I told you so'. Threatening to buy him a car.
His wife and babies are glad he's alive. We know he'll get another bike. We know this man will not welcome being wrapped in cotton wool. We know that if we tell him 'NO' - he'll do it anyway. It's him. That's why we love him...
...even though he's hobbling round like a 90 year old.
The babies have been whisked off for a weekend with Grandma and Grandpa. I'm booked onto an overlocker course tomorrow. Moogsdad insists that I go.
He'll be happy at home with a plate of sandwiches, a flask of tea and as many crappy b&w WWII films as you can shake a stick at.
As I said - 's*** happens'. We deal with it. I'm not going to force us to spend our lives thinking about the 'what ifs'.
Having said that, if either of my kids ever buy a motorcycle - I'll strangle them with it!!

Here in South Dakota we don't have a helmet law and there are SO MANY idiots who don't wear them.
so glad that he is ok, just walking wounded, shows how good the protection gear is getting these days. Must admit 15 years ago I made the doctors gently manhandle my broken elbow out of my leathers, let them cut the waterproofs off but they weren't touching my jacket!!

eek! Aren't helmets the best? My husband got thrown off his (push) bike recently and I was so thankful that he had a good helmet on.

well written, I think about this everyday when my husband jumps on his bike. We've been through 3 accidents, one very scary and a couple of bikes due to silly car drivers. I will never stop him from riding either. Glad he's okay.

I think you're right--you can't live other people's lives for them--but thank God he doesn't want to climb mountains! Or does he? Here in Portland, Mt. Hood is very easily accessible and several people every year are killed climbing it. I always feel so bad for the families involved. But...your guy is okay! we got my DH a motorbike a few weeks ago and he is as happy as a pig in sh!t.I worry too.but the joy on his face is more than worth it.

That phone call must have been terrifying. We have helmet laws and adds on tv showing what happens if you don't wear leathers. I'm glad he is okay and you are being so brave xx

God, that must have been scary. I'm so glad he's ok and hope he is feeling better soon. My hubby has a not-so-secret desire to get a bike and I dread something like this, although, as you say, it's almost bound to happen sooner or later. Everyone I know who has a bike has had some kind of accident but, thankfully, they've all been ok. Thank goodness for bike helmets.

I told my son "As long as I'm your mother you will never have a motorcycle". Lot of good that did! He bought a used one and had to ride it from Seattle to Portland on a very wet and rainy day to get it to his house. The freeways are crubbish (skinny, winding) with lots of large triple long trucks. I think the trip was harrowing to say the least! He ended up NOT buying it, thank you Lord Jesus, Amen!!!

Oh blimey Lesley - I've only just seen this. So sorry to hear about the accident - just what you all needed. Not. Thank goodness for helmets and leathers, eh? I understand the freedom of bikes, but you do need to be properly 'protected'. Thank goodness he's ok.

Oh Lesley, how horrible - I've only just read this now and I'm so sorry to hear you had such a scary ordeal. Definitely one of the the worst nightmares of a motorcyclist's relative.

I think you commented on my "Trials of a biker's wife" post last year so you know I feel your pain on this one - although I'm pretty glad I don't feel Moogsdad's pain...coz..OUCH!!
Glad he's okay and there's no permanent damage. Bet the first thing all his biker mates ask was if his bike made it though ;)

Poor Mr Moog and poor you, big hugs (but not tight squeezes) all round. Drives me nuts that car drivers often `don't see' motorbikes, I'm extra extra special careful about it as Mr Twigs has been knocked off his bike in the past.

Glad all is well. I've just shown your post to my hubby and told him "this is why you sold your bike!" I always worried I'd get that call when he rode. My DH has a Shoei helmet too...just in case he ever gets another bike...glad to see it did does what it says on the package.

Yeap you're right Sxxx Happens. Thank heavens for helmets and you are right - wrapping the man of the house in cotton wool and banning bikes forever won't do anyone any good. Life is meant to be lived by all of you. It's good to hear that DH is ok and that you and the kids survived the trauma. Enjoy your course - you need some normality after that little shock. he's been very lucky, so glad he's going to be ok. i know how you feel about things like this, my other half is a motorbike rider too (although his is currently in pieces waiting to be rebuilt!)

i hope you are all ok now and Moogsdad is fully recovered. Helmets are wonderful, Ali flew over her handle bars on her bicycle 10 years ago and the helmet saved her from a head injury she broke her wrist instead. Get well soon. Jane x

Oh my goodness, my thoughts are with you. I am a motorbikers wife so understand this post and some of the thoughts about buying cars instead and NEVER allowing children on bikes. The main thing is he is OK.

I have been through the very same situation, my OH had a serious motorbike accident back in the 1980s, I still get choked up when we talk about it now, he hasn't riden a bike since. I am so relieved your husband is OK and he was wearing a good helmet and leathers. Here's to a very speedy recovery. x
