Of course I had to get cracking on my current obsession.
It was surprisingly quick to piece together and now awaits a border, some batting and quilting, then binding.
This is where I will need some advice from you seasoned quilty peeps.
Hand or machine quilt (bearing in mind that even with a 'walking foot' I invariably end up with major puckers!!)??
How to quilt? Along the seams, freehand squiggly stylee, in lines??
What's the best thread for quilting?
If there's anything else I should know, do tell!!
I haven't started the second quilt yet as I've been working today.
Working involved a bit of this:
Preparing newspaper mush for a papermaking project with a special needs school tomorrow :)

Oh the squish of the wet gluey paper during crafting at school I couldn't stand the stuff!!! Lovely quilting there Mrssus sorry i haven't learnt enough to be of help with quilting except i hand quilted mine to stop the puckering but i loved your home made plum jam and the you tube videos my favourite had to be the Two Ronnies with Fork 'andles Jane x
Oh the quilt looks gorgeous. It gives me an urge to play with turqoise and garnets - hmm. Can't help on the quilting side I'm afraid. Have a great time at work tomorrow - sounds magic.
Blimey Lesley, you don't hang about do you? As regards the quilty questions - you need to think about what sort of batting you want - do you want it fairly 'flat' or good and puffy? If you want it puffy, get a thick batting and just quilt along the seams, then each square will 'puff up'. If you want a flatter quilt, get a thinner batting, and then quilt all over it, or with designs within each square.
At least that what mum told me, and she should know!

Top quilt top missus! I say hand quilt (but that's probably influenced by the fact that I am unable to do it on my ancient machine). It's wonderfully therapeutic. I use Guterman 100% Cotton Quilting thread (it has a bit more body than normal thread and gives a lovely finish).
As for design, it's entirely personal, but I always think on the diagonal looks great with a square patch.
Above all, have fun with it. It's an heirloom in the making.

Your quilt top looks gorgeous! I must say I wasn't too impressed with the second picture of fabric strips you'd chosen - then I realised they were you gloopy newspaper scraps!

I'm rubbish at quilting big things - my so-called quilter's companion machine puckers with the walking foot on too so I always just end up sewing nice buttons on at random points on the quilt and maybe doing something round the edge.

wow, your quilt top looks gorgeous - one of the best threads to quilt with, i've found, is Gutermann's quilting thread, its 100% cotton. as for batting, one that is good is bonded quilt batting, its easy to quilt through and is very soft and light - also its non allergenic. there are loads of sites you can get it on if you don't have a quilt shop nearby. if you quilt close to the seam lines, this is called quilting 'in the ditch' - its great to start with as you can just stitch along and get into a rythmn. - hope that helps! i'm not an expert, just self taught!

I really love that red and turqoise combo. I like puffy quilts so I tend to quilt mine "in the gutter" so to speak (that's along the seams). These colours would probably look nice with all over quilting though. I'm sure it'll look fab either way.

Love the idea of papermaking. I did itonce, many moons ago, but mine just ended up grey and grotty!
Okay... I've been working (or thinking about working) on my quilt for months now and you just whip them out!!!! I say do whatever you like. Stitch in the ditch. I'm glad you're enjoying your new job... was that sarcasm or do you really mean it??
I've been feeling the quilting bug too but can't be of much help because I'm just learning myself. Can't wait to see how it goes and read the advice you get on the subject.

I love your quilt - i use an invisible thread for quilting - it is great especially for hiding the odd whoopsie. I love paper mache .... I must do some more ....
I love both of the quilt tops.
You could quilt in the ditch on the machine which would hold it all together and then do some more decorative hand quilting. It depends how quickly you want to finish it as hand quilting all of it would take longer.
I think tacking (basting)or pinning all three layers together thoroughly before quilting should help with the puckering problem. Check there are no puckers before starting quilting.
I'm no quilting expert although have done a few in my time with a few puckers along the way!

505 glue spray is what you need first ! To keep the layers together. And I suggest you quilt cloud shapes to emphasize the lovely cloud fabric (where did you get that?)!
